We’ve caught up with one of Accenture’s Digital Business Managers, Matthew Buckland, to learn more about why Accenture is supporting Lightning Lab GovTech.

What made you want to be involved in the programme?

We want to help Government clients re-imagine how they support their citizens. Lightning Labs provides an environment for these teams to solve real-world problems in new and innovative ways. We want to support the teams on that journey.

Accenture recently launched a new initiative, The Garden. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

The Garden is the home of our New Zealand and Australia Government and Health Innovation and Advisory Network, it’s a combination of physical spaces and a virtual portal which we use to support our clients explore new ideas and innovation.

Through The Garden, clients can access services like innovation showcases, ideation workshops and rapid prototyping.

What’s the biggest challenge for governments today?

The speed of change. Governments are made up of many different organisations, all with their own problems to solve and their own bureaucracy. The expectations of citizens are higher than ever and continue to increase as technology quickly evolves. Government agencies ability to keep up with this demand is what will define their success, and so the success of their citizen’s.

Why is NZ the ideal place to build the GovTech sector from?

NZ is in a unique position, it’s a stable democracy with a population size perfect for fostering collaboration. It’s an environment which allows ideas to be tried and shared, which really accelerates the application of new ideas.

What’s the value of investing in GovTech?

We want to support the teams in creating innovative solutions to real problems, then take them on the journey of scaling these solutions so they benefit as many people as possible.
