Lightning Lab GovTech provides an opportunity for you to work on some of the most impactful problems facing government today.
We’re looking for people who want to make a difference to local and central governments. You can apply either as an individual or if you’ve got an existing startup or company, you can also apply.
There will be a number of projects taking part in the inaugural Lightning Lab GovTech. For 2018, the projects come from both central and local governments. Each of the projects fit into one of the broad themes below.
Governments globally are planning for a more digital future
In New Zealand, public service interactions with citizens are becoming more efficient, but there’s still room for improvement.
Digital access is widespread, but for more streamlined nation-wide interactions between government and citizens, governments need to build confidence with the public.
Build a more connected New Zealand.
New Zealand’s landscapes are world famous
A draw for tourists from around the world, New Zealand’s scenery is like mother nature’s film-set, but it’s at risk.
New Zealand has many beautiful, natural features and local and central government want to keep them looking their best, starting with our waterways.
Protect one of our country’s best-looking assets.
Solving social issues is a team effort
Agencies have limited time and resources. So that they can provide for New Zealanders who require the attention most, there’s a growing need for self-managed services.
Collaboration is at the heart of social, so to make a positive and long-lasting difference in the social sector the support of the public is needed.
Positively impact everyday New Zealanders.
Education is the key to positive impact.
Investing in citizens through education helps them develop and grow with those around them.
New Zealand is known for its people-first values, with hundreds of caring communities making it the great place that it is.
Build strong communities around the country.
Think you’ve got what it takes to make a difference?
For individuals who want to participate, here is your process:
APPLY TO A PROJECT OR PROJECTS
Once we have chosen the Projects in Lightning Lab GovTech, they will be listed on the website and promoted. As an individual, you can apply to one or several Projects. You can also form a team and apply as a team to those projects looking for a Project team. The application process will open at the beginning of May.
If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to participate in a brief interview with the Lightning Lab GovTech programme team. Times and location are to be determined.
PROJECT TEAM SELECTION
Top candidates will be invited to participate in the Project Teams for which they applied. You will be notified of selection for a Project Team within days of the interviews.
The week before the programme starts, your Project Team will report to the Lightning Lab facility and spend a week getting prepared for the accelerator programme. Your team will learn new leadership and team building techniques that will enable them to perform at their best in the programme. During this week wider teams will also have opportunities to participate.
Your Project Team will work side-by-side with the other Project Teams in the Lightning Lab facility for the entire 12 weeks of the accelerator programme. Teams receive help from our Lightning Lab GovTech programme staff, Creative HQ startup coaches, mentors, and expert advisors. They use specific lean startup and agile methods that have been proven to be useful for innovating in a government setting through work with dozens of teams from several different government agencies in New Zealand.
DEMO DAY SHOWCASE
Once the programme is complete, your Project team presents to your agency’s leadership, other government officials, and the interested public in a Demo Day showcase event. Past Demo Day events have had been over 500 attendees, including several ministers, foreign officials and the press.
